Waxing Fjällräven G-1000 clothing
The G-1000 fabric from Fjällräven is a tightly woven fabric made from 65% polyester and 35% cotton, with a Greenland wax layer on top. This wax layer makes the fabric water-resistant and more durable. It is used to create various items, from backpacks to jackets and pants. Once treated with Greenland Wax, the fabric becomes water and wind-resistant and more resistant to wear and tear.
Greenland Wax consists of beeswax and paraffin. Most G-1000 products are already pre-treated with wax, but it's useful to know how to reapply and remove the wax. In this guide, we'll show you how to make pants water and wind-resistant again, but the instructions are applicable to all Fjällräven G-1000 products.
Removal of the Greenland Wax
When you wash dirty G-1000 clothing from Fjällräven, the wax layer gradually disappears, requiring you to reapply the wax. However, the wax does not need to be completely washed away before applying a new layer.
Additionally, it is not always necessary or practical for your clothing to be wind-resistant and water-repellent. On warm, sunny days, for example, you might prefer your clothing to allow a lot of air circulation. If you want to remove Greenland Wax from your clothing, wash it two or three times at 40°C. The wax will be completely gone, and your clothing will be clean and fresh again.
Application of the wax
Take the Greenland Wax block and rub the wax evenly over the fabric of the pants (or other items you want to treat) with long and even strokes. You can use either the narrow or wide side of the Greenland Wax block; it doesn't matter. Don't forget to apply the wax thoroughly to the seams and stitches as well.
You want a thin, smooth, and even layer of wax to remain on the pants. Apply a bit of pressure while waxing, but make sure to work neatly, avoiding any wax lumps on the pants.
Melting the wax
Using a hairdryer or iron, melt the wax and allow it to penetrate the fabric thoroughly. This 'melting' provides the best result that looks neat. The wax melts between 55°C and 60°C, so try to keep the temperature of your hairdryer or iron around or below this temperature. You want to avoid the wax becoming too liquid.
You can repeat the treatment several times to make the pants even more resistant to wind and water. For example, if you're treating a jacket, it's a good idea to give the hood an extra treatment to make it even more waterproof.
Preferably, use an old iron that you don't use for other purposes. After waxing, the sole of the iron can get dirty, causing stains on other clothing. If you don't have another iron, don't forget to clean the iron thoroughly!
Result
Your pants or other G-1000 garment from Fjällräven are once again maximally resistant to strong winds and heavy rain. By re-impregnating your outdoor products, they last longer. Greenland Wax is also an environmentally friendly product, not only benefiting your clothing but also nature.
